Why do you have to put yourself in a bucket
Published on February 9, 2006 By Foxjazz In Religion
First off, let me say that Deism and agnostics are NOT mutually exclusive terms.
Agnostic is a statement about knowledge.
Agnostics believe it is not possible to know God.
Agnostics and atheists are not mutually exclisive either.

Most Christians are agnostic, even though they may not think themselvs this way, it is simply a fact.
Even the Bible says you can't know the mind of God.
The bible says you must be an agnostic.
Now the gnostics were different.

I totally agree Dr. Guy. Agnostics believe that it is unknown if there is a God. Angonstics question most things about religion. Christians know God through his son Jesus Christ. There is no question about it. That is the whole basis of christianity. If you don't feel you have a personal relationship with Jesus and that Jesus is the son of God, then you aren't christian.

Sorry, agnostic and christian are completely different outlooks.

Well I will have to admin I am wrong on a point.

Agnostism is not specifically attributed to belief or propositions about God. But it can be applied.

An agnostic is someone who allows that the sentence expresses a proposition, and who grants that he/she knows what that proposition is, but who is noncommittal about its truth or falsity on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

I agree that Christians claim to have significant evidence, through faith. However much that may negate faith if there actually were evidence.
So its really back to the non-sensical equation of faith.

Thomas Huxley wrote:
Agnosticism is not a creed but a method, the essence of which lies in vigorous application of a single principle. Positively the principle may be expressed as: in matters of intellect, follow your reason as far as it can carry you without other considerations. And negatively, in matters of the intellect, do not pretend the conclusions are certain that are not demonstrated or demonstrable. It is wrong for a man to say he is certain of the objective truth of a proposition unless he can produce evidence which logically justifies that certainty. That is what Agnosticism asserts; and, in my opinion, it is all that is essential to Agnosticism. ... The application of the principle results in the denial of, or the suspension of judgment concerning, a number of propositions respecting which our contemporary ecclesiastical "gnostics" profess entire certainty.[1]

How can faith be non-sensical? If you feel with all of your being that something is true, how is that non-sensical? However, christians who claim they have proof that God exists and Jesus is his son are misguided. There is no proof. Faith is commitment without proof.

You can know something to be true in your own heart without being able to prove it to anyone else. Perhaps christians have seen evidence of God and Jesus along their own unique paths in life. Just as they can't prove that evidence, noone can disprove it either.

Agnostics feel that God is unknown, christians feel they know God. Two very different perspectives.

You can assert something to be true in your own heart, it doesn't make it true or a part of reality. People have asserted that they can fly in their own heart, and after leaping off the tall building, well found out they really couldn't fly.
Agnostics state that it is not possible to know God. Its not a feeling, but a point of reason.

I have felt that ghosts have existed before, and the monster under the bed, nevermind santa. But reality as you can see is very different.

I can feel sprititual, without a necessity of a concept of God around the spirituality that I accept.

I believe that it is the drive for truth ( I mean real truth) that makes us highly cautious about what we assert to be true or not true, no matter our journey and the mistakes we make travelling.
Christians make claims, and group together to feed on each others claims, because it is not enough for them to accept the claim on their own. They must have cooboration.
When I wake up, and take my first breath of air for the day, I don't ask my wife (hey you still breathing, cause I am also). I don't need to.

No argument there. I myself am not christian. Matter of fact, christians who don't know me have accused me of being anti-christian. Just because I don't believe it to be true myself doesn't mean I have anything against others who do.

I am not trying to say that Christianity is a provable truth. Far from it. I am just pointing out the error in saying that christians are agnostic.
